FEIT TREK 87.5% is made in the Montebelluna Sport System region, located in the foothills of the Italian Alps.

Long recognized as the outdoor <<Sport System>> manufacturing capital of the world, I built my first design team in Montebelluna in 1998 and returned in 2022 with the goal of building the world's most natural outdoor trekking shoe for FEIT.

Utilising the technical experience of the region, we have minimized the use of synthetics, creating a trekking shoe that is made from 87.5% natural materials. Engineered from a custom FEIT x Vibram's new no-oil compound outsole, vegetable-tanned leather upper and insole and natural latex cushioning, the shoe represents a combination of FEIT's expertise in natural material development and the region's rich manufacturing heritage.

This project is produced in a limited run of 96 pairs.

Process & Materials

Historically, mountaineering and work boots were treated with tallow, waxes, and oils to improve weather resistance, exactly the kind of tradition that comes out of places like Montebelluna and the Dolomites.

The upper of the TREK 87.5% is constructed from natural, vegetable-tanned leather and finished using a traditional fat-liquoring process. Natural animal fats are gently heated and worked into the leather by hand, allowing the fibers to absorb the oils before the material is slowly dried and rested. This treatment nourishes and conditions the leather from within, increasing resistance to moisture while preserving breathability, strength, and flexibility. It is a time-intensive, low-impact alternative to synthetic waterproofing.

Components & Details

FEIT TREK 87.5% is the world’s first 87.5% all natural outdoor trekking shoe, built on a custom FEIT x Vibram no-oil outsole engineered for performance, comfort, and longevity.

The tread is defined by an aggressive geometry of deep, well-spaced lugs anchored by Chevron elements that deliver consistent traction across varied terrain. In the forefoot, they support push-off and grip; at the heel, their reversed orientation improves braking control and downhill stability. Larger, more structured perimeter lugs reinforce lateral stability, while a slimmer, less-lugged mid-arch reduces weight. Deep channels between lugs enhance self-cleaning so mud and debris release easily with each step, maintaining traction in changing conditions.

Location & Specialty

Montebelluna is globally recognized as the origin of modern trekking and technical outdoor shoes as we know them today. Situated in the Sport System region at the foothills of the Italian Alps, it developed in direct response to the surrounding terrain. The Dolomites are among Europe’s most demanding alpine environments. For generations, local craftsmen built footwear for woodcutters, shepherds, soldiers, and climbers; long before “trekking” existed as a category. What began as necessity evolved into a culture of precision, durability, and performance.

FEIT TREK 87.5% is made here, not simply as a place of production, but as a continuation of lineage. Montebelluna is where outdoor footwear shifted from utility to performance, where traditional handcraft merged with technical innovation, and where the idea of a natural, low-impact, mountain-capable shoe was first realized and refined.
